What Should I Schedule Before Moving Out of State?

Confirm when you can leave the old home and get into the new one, then book transportation and building access around those dates. Schedule bulky-item pickup before loading day, and book the final clean after the old home is empty. At the new address, arrange utilities and internet around your arrival. Schedule furniture assembly or installation once you know when the items will be there.

What to book first at each address

1. Confirm the dates that control the move

Write down when you have to hand back the old keys, when you can pick up the new keys, and when your belongings can be picked up and delivered. If there’s a gap between addresses, decide where you’ll stay and ask your provider about storage and redelivery before you commit to dates.

2. Book transportation and building access together

Compare movers, a rental truck, or a moving container based on what works at both addresses. Ask each property manager about loading hours, elevator reservations, and any documents they need from your mover. Share those details with your provider before locking in the schedule.

3. Clear and clean the old home in order

Book donation pickup, recycling, or hauling for anything you’re leaving behind. Allow time to finish any agreed move-out repairs before the final cleaning. Give the cleaner a window after the movers have finished and before the walkthrough or key handoff.

4. Book what you need to use the new home

Arrange utility start dates and book an internet appointment if you need one. Confirm delivery timing before booking furniture assembly. Plan TV mounting, shelving, or window treatments once you know the room layout and have any building or landlord approvals you need.

What to confirm the week before you leave

  • Pickup and delivery. Confirm the windows, contact numbers, and who will be at each address to let the crew in.
  • Building access. Recheck the loading spot, elevator reservation, key pickup, and any paperwork your building requested.
  • Old-home appointments. Confirm bulky-item pickups, the final clean, the walkthrough, and key return.
  • First-night essentials. Keep chargers, a change of clothes, bedding, and work supplies with you if you’ll need them before delivery.
  • Follow-on appointments. Check rescheduling terms for assembly and installation in case your shipment arrives late.

Example: You get the keys Friday, but delivery is Saturday through Monday

Book key pickup and any internet appointment you can attend independently of the shipment. Ask the mover when they’ll be able to narrow the delivery window, then check which elevator times your building can offer. If your bed and desk are on the truck, put assembly after confirmed delivery or choose an appointment you can move. Carry what you’ll need if the truck arrives Monday.

Need help turning your move dates into a schedule?

Bring your pickup and delivery windows, key dates, and any building instructions. Share photos of tight stairs or bulky items if those are part of the decision. We’ll walk through what to book now, what depends on another appointment, and what can wait until after you arrive.
