What makes UMass Boston move-in different?
UMass Boston is located at 100 Morrissey Boulevard on Columbia Point in Dorchester, near Boston Harbor, the JFK/UMass MBTA station, the HarborWalk and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
UMass Boston has a large commuter population, and many students live throughout Boston and surrounding communities. Students with confirmed on-campus housing live in the East and West Residence Halls near the university’s academic buildings.

Is UMass Boston housing guaranteed?
No. UMass Boston on-campus housing is limited, offered on a first-come, first-served basis and is not guaranteed.
Priority for Fall 2026 housing is given to incoming first-time first-year students. Students should complete every required housing step promptly and continue monitoring university email for status updates.
Students who do not receive a confirmed room should begin comparing off-campus housing rather than assuming a residence-hall space will become available.

Housing is billed separately from university charges
Residence-hall housing charges are billed separately and do not appear as ordinary housing charges in the student’s WISER university account. Students use the housing payment and Resident Portal systems provided after confirmation.
Residential meal plans are required. Meal-plan charges appear on the university bill, while the residence-hall room charge is handled separately.
Families using financial aid should review the procedure for transferring eligible excess aid toward the separate housing charge.
On-campus living
East and West Residence Halls
UMass Boston’s modern residence-hall complex opened in 2018 and includes two connected buildings near the academic campus.
East Residence Hall
Includes residential rooms, community spaces, the Housing and Residential Life office, the Dining Commons and UMarket.
West Residence Hall
Includes residential rooms, lounges and a small shared kitchenette available to residents.
Double, Triple and Quad Rooms
Housing includes several shared-room configurations with either an in-room private bathroom or access to community bathrooms.
In-Room Bath
Residents sharing a private bathroom are responsible for cleaning it and must provide their own toilet paper and shower curtain.
Hallway Bath
Community bathrooms are maintained by staff and include provided toilet paper, soap and shower curtains.
Single Rooms
Single rooms are extremely limited and are generally assigned to students with approved disability-related accommodations.

Review university email and the Resident Portal for the building, room type, roommates and final move-in instructions.
Navigate to the residence-hall complex
Use the exact housing directions provided by UMass Boston rather than assuming the main academic-campus entrance is the correct unloading route.
Unload in the designated area
Keep identification, medications, bedding and first-night supplies accessible while helpers unload clearly labeled containers.
Move the vehicle promptly

Permitted appliances
Coordinate the refrigerator and microwave
UMass Boston permits selected room appliances, including a microwave no greater than 700 watts and a mini refrigerator no larger than 3.1 cubic feet.
Double rooms may have one mini refrigerator. Triple and quad rooms may have up to two. Coordinate with roommates before purchasing or renting equipment.
Other listed permitted products include automatic-shutoff single-serve coffee makers, electric kettles, air fryers, rice cookers and slow cookers. Students should verify the current list before bringing any appliance.
Protect the residence room
Television wall mounting is not permitted
Televisions may be brought into the residence halls, but wall mounting is not permitted. Use a stable tabletop or freestanding television stand.
Students should not use nails, staples, tape, poster glue or adhesive-mounted lighting. UMass Boston identifies thumbtacks or push pins as the approved method for attaching decorations to room walls.
Decorations should not cover more than 25 percent of the wall and nothing may hang from the ceiling, sprinkler heads or smoke detectors.

No Outside Furniture
Wooden and upholstered furniture, gaming chairs, headboards and replacement seating are not permitted.
No Adhesive Strip Lights
Adhesive LED strip lights, tape, poster glue and similar wall products are prohibited.
No Exposed Heating Elements
Space heaters, hot plates and unapproved cooking or heating products should not be brought.
No Extension Cords
Use approved surge protectors rather than extension cords or basic multi-outlet adapters.
No E-Bikes Indoors
Bicycles, electronic scooters and similar equipment cannot be stored inside the residence halls.
Limited Pets
Approved service animals and support animals are handled through the proper process. Ordinary pets are restricted to permitted fish tanks.
Protect student belongings
Review renters or personal-property insurance
UMass Boston does not provide renters insurance for residence-hall belongings. Families should check whether the student is covered under an existing homeowners policy or needs separate protection.
Photograph computers, electronics, bicycles and other valuable items before move-in and record model and serial numbers.
Campus transportation
Test the route from JFK/UMass station
UMass Boston provides shuttle connections between campus and the JFK/UMass MBTA station. Students living off campus should include both the train or bus trip and the campus shuttle portion when evaluating a commute.
A neighborhood may appear close on a map but require transfers, waiting time or a substantial walk to the nearest useful transit stop.
