Confirm which campus and arrival group applies
Tufts University operates undergraduate housing on its Medford/Somerville campus and separate housing connected with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts near Beacon Street.
This guide focuses primarily on the Medford/Somerville campus. Students should confirm their housing campus, residence assignment, approved arrival date and check-in location before making travel or unloading plans.
Fall 2026
Tufts University move-in dates
Different student groups have different arrival dates. Students should not assume that the general new-student date applies to pre-orientation, athletics, graduate housing or returning residents.
Pre-orientation arrival
Move-in times depend on the assigned program
TWO and CREATE
Students participating in Tufts Wilderness Orientation or CREATE use the earliest published Medford/Somerville check-in period.
BEAST, FOCUS and GO
Students in these pre-orientation programs use the middle arrival period.
FIT, SHAPE and SQUAD
Students in these programs use the later published arrival window.
Arrival procedure
Medford/Somerville check-in begins at Joyce Cummings Center
Go to 177 College Avenue
New Medford/Somerville residents check in at Joyce Cummings Center before proceeding to their residence hall.
Pick up identification and keys
Students receive or verify their Tufts ID and collect a room key when the assigned residence uses physical keys.
Continue to the assigned residence
After check-in, follow the university’s residence-specific driving, unloading and parking instructions.
Use the late-arrival location when necessary
New Medford/Somerville students arriving after check-in closes are directed to Tufts University Police in Dowling Hall at 419 Boston Avenue.
On-campus housing
Tufts offers several types of residential communities
Campus housing includes traditional residence halls, special-interest houses, suites, apartments and smaller converted houses.
Traditional Residence Halls
Incoming students are assigned a roommate and residence using the required Housing Survey.
Suites and Apartments
Some continuing students live in apartment-style or suite-style university housing with shared common areas.
Wood-Frame Houses
Tufts operates smaller residential houses that may have different entrances, stairs and unloading conditions.
Incoming undergraduates
Complete the Housing Survey before the deadline
Incoming undergraduates use the Tufts Housing Survey to provide information used in residence-hall and roommate assignments.
For the 2026–2027 academic year, the published survey deadline is 5:00 p.m. on June 20, 2026. Housing assignments are expected in the Housing Portal no later than July 31, 2026.
Families should wait for the actual building and room assignment before purchasing large storage products or planning the final unloading route.
Housing availability
Which Tufts students are required to live on campus?
Tufts generally requires and guarantees campus housing for first-year and sophomore undergraduates who complete the required process.
Many juniors and seniors live in apartments in Medford, Somerville and nearby communities, although some upper-level campus housing is also available.

Appliances and refrigeration
Standalone microwaves are not allowed in student rooms
Tufts permits approved combination refrigerator-and-microwave units obtained through its designated MicroChill program.
Standalone microwaves are prohibited in student bedrooms. Ordinary microwave ovens may be used only in approved kitchen or common-kitchen areas.
No more than one MicroChill unit or mini refrigerator may be present in a room. Roommates should coordinate before arranging a rental or bringing refrigeration.
Residence restrictions
Leave prohibited equipment at home
No Additional Furniture
Couches, futons, upholstered chairs, shelving, headboards and similar personal furniture are prohibited.
No Adhesive LED Strips
Adhesive LED light strips are identified as prohibited residential items.
No Open Flames
Candles, incense and open flames are prohibited even when intended only for decoration or fragrance.
No Space Heaters
Personal air conditioners, space heaters and high-heat lamps are prohibited unless an accommodation specifically applies.
No Cooking in Bedrooms
Hot plates, rice cookers, grills and cooking devices with exposed heating elements are prohibited in student rooms.
No E-Bikes Indoors
E-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards and similar battery-powered transportation devices cannot be stored inside residence halls.
Protect the room
Do not permanently alter Tufts residence walls
Modifications to university housing structures, walls, paint, furniture and fixtures are not permitted.
Students should not drill, install shelves, mount a television or attach home-theater equipment in a residence hall unless current written housing guidance expressly authorizes the installation.
Use a stable tabletop television stand and only currently approved removable decorating methods.
What to bring to a Boston student dormShipping before move-in
Do not send Medford campus packages before August 1
Tufts allows students to ship packages to the Medford campus mailroom before move-in, but packages should not be sent before August 1.
Plan for packages to arrive at least two days before the student’s approved arrival so staff have time to check them in and issue a pickup notification.
The Medford campus mailroom is located at 46 Professors Row in the lower level of the Campus Store.
Parking and unloading
Expect hills, one-way streets and residence-specific routes
Use the assigned route
The Medford/Somerville campus spans a hill and several local roads. Follow Tufts’ current arrival directions rather than navigating directly to a building entrance without guidance.
Bring a folding cart
A compact dolly or rolling cart can help with longer walks, elevators, stairs and residence entrances after the vehicle leaves the unloading zone.

When do other new Tufts students move in?
New Medford/Somerville students who are not participating in pre-orientation move in on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
When do returning Tufts residents move in?
Standard returning-student move-in is Sunday, September 6, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Where do new Tufts students check in?

When are first-year Tufts housing assignments released?
Tufts states that 2026–2027 incoming undergraduate housing assignments will be available in the Housing Portal no later than July 31, 2026.
Can students bring a standalone microwave?
No. Standalone microwaves are not permitted in student bedrooms. Approved combination MicroChill units may be used under Tufts’ current housing rules.
Can a television be mounted in a Tufts dorm?
Students should not drill or permanently mount televisions or other equipment in university housing. Use a stable tabletop or freestanding television stand.
