Should I Hire Movers, Rent a Truck, or Use a Moving Container?

Hire movers if you want a crew to load, drive, and unload. Rent a truck if you can handle the driving and arrange help at both addresses. Consider a moving container if you want someone else to transport it and have a place to leave it while you load. Check access at both homes before comparing prices. A good quote is only useful if the truck or container can go where you need it.

What each moving option asks of you

Hire movers

This option fits when you want a crew to handle the lifting and transport. Ask whether the estimate includes packing, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and carrying items up stairs or along a long hallway. Give the mover the same inventory and access details for both homes.

Rent a moving truck

This option fits when you’re comfortable driving the truck and can arrange loading and unloading help. Compare the rental price with mileage, fuel, tolls, equipment, and any paid labor. Check the return location and deadline before choosing a pickup time.

Use a moving container

This option fits when you want time to load at your own pace and the provider can place and retrieve the container at both addresses. Confirm the placement location with the provider and property manager where applicable. Ask what the quote includes for transport, storage, redelivery, and pickup.

Compare the total cost for the same move

Use the same inventory, dates, and addresses for all three options. Then add the work or expenses you’ll cover yourself.

  • Labor at both ends. Price loading and unloading separately if you’re booking help by the hour. Include furniture assembly if you’ll need it on arrival.
  • Access at both homes. Check curb or driveway space, the distance from the vehicle to the door, stairs, elevator reservations, and any building requirements.
  • Time between homes. If your keys aren’t available on the day you leave, ask where your belongings can wait, how much that costs, and when they can be delivered.
  • Delivery timing. Ask for the expected delivery window and what happens if the schedule changes. Plan separately for anything you need the first night.

Example: Moving from an apartment to a condo

Say your current building gives you a two-hour loading window and your new condo has a service elevator you have to reserve. Ask a container provider whether it can place the container at each address for the time you need. If a container can’t stay at either building, compare a rental truck with hired loading and unloading help against a mover who can work with both buildings’ schedules.

If you’re still deciding whether to take a large sofa or dresser, get quotes with and without those pieces. That will show whether a smaller truck or a different move plan changes the total.
