How Do I Compare Two Long-Distance Moving Quotes?
Give both companies the same inventory, addresses, dates, and list of services. Then compare their written estimates line by line. Check the estimate type, the work included at both addresses, and what could change the price. Ask each company to clarify missing items in writing before you choose.
What to compare side by side
- Inventory. Match the furniture, estimated boxes, and bulky items. Include anything in a garage, basement, or storage unit.
- Packing and setup. Check who supplies boxes, packs fragile items, and takes apart or reassembles furniture. Ask whether those services are included or priced separately.
- Access at both addresses. Flag stairs, elevator reservations, and long walks from the truck to the door. If a large truck may have trouble getting close, ask whether a smaller shuttle vehicle is needed and how it would be priced.
- Pickup, delivery, and storage. Compare the date windows in writing. If there’s a gap between move-out and move-in, ask how storage and redelivery would be handled and priced.
- Payment and shipment protection. Check what is due at booking, pickup, and delivery. Ask what protection is included and which options would add to the cost.
Check whether the interstate estimate is binding
For an interstate household move, ask for a written estimate based on an in-person or virtual review of what you’re moving. A binding estimate sets the amount for the goods and services it covers. Ask how additions or changes will be handled before you agree to them. A nonbinding estimate can change based on factors such as the actual shipment weight and the services provided.
Ask whether the company will move your belongings itself or arrange the move through a carrier. If you’re speaking with a broker, ask who will transport the shipment. Read FMCSA’s guide to interstate moving estimates.
Example: The lower estimate leaves out work you need
Suppose Company A estimates $2,450 for the move and Company B estimates $2,750. Company B includes $200 worth of packing and a $175 destination stair carry in its price. If Company A confirms those same services would add $375, its revised estimate is $2,825. In this example, Company B is $75 lower once both estimates cover the same work.
Compare the delivery windows before deciding. An estimate that saves $75 may be less useful if the delivery window falls outside the days your building can reserve the elevator.
Have two estimates and still can’t tell what’s included?
Bring both written estimates, your move dates, and any notes or photos showing access at either address. We’ll help you spot differences and make a short list of questions to send the companies before you book.
