Washington, DC Moving & Home-Sale Prep Guide

Before booking a Washington, DC move, confirm where the truck can load and how the crew will reach the home. A rowhouse may have front steps or a rear entrance worth measuring. A condo may need a loading-dock booking and an elevator reservation. If you’re selling, schedule furniture removal, repairs, and cleaning around listing photos and the final walkthrough.

What to plan for your Washington, DC move or sale

Moving to or within the District

Ask the mover which entrance it plans to use and where the truck can stop. For a truck using District public space, check DDOT’s permit and sign-posting instructions through the Transportation Online Permitting System. Give the mover the actual loading window and photos of the posted curb signs before confirming the schedule.

Selling a rowhouse or condo

Ask your agent what should stay for photos and what must be out by the walkthrough. Include basement storage, any assigned storage locker, and belongings in rear or outdoor areas. If a hauler needs to use a service entrance or elevator, confirm its access separately from the moving crew’s reservation.

Furniture delivery and move-in setup

Compare the front and rear routes before ordering a sofa or dresser. Measure the usable opening, the landing, and the first turn inside. For an elevator delivery, send the crew both the elevator door and cabin dimensions. Once the main furniture is placed, decide where shelves, mirrors, or window treatments should go.

TV mounting and DIY

Take a wide photo of the TV wall from the seating area and note outlet and soundbar locations. Share the TV and bracket model numbers with the installer. If you’re unsure what’s behind plaster or another finished surface, have the wall checked before drilling. Ask management what work is allowed if you’re in a rental or managed building.

Can you schedule bulk pickup before you move?

DC Public Works offers bulk collection by appointment to households that receive DPW trash collection. Confirm your address, the items you need collected, and the set-out instructions before booking. If your building uses private collection, ask management what it can arrange. If the earliest pickup is after key return, book another option while you still have access.

For an address outside the District, use the parking and disposal instructions for that address’s city or county.

Example — A Capitol Hill rowhouse to a Navy Yard condo

Suppose the condo offers a 1–3 p.m. elevator slot. Show the mover the rowhouse steps and curb before asking for a pickup time. Then confirm how early the crew needs to reach the condo to check in, unload, and finish within the reservation. If a dresser is staying behind for collection, arrange its removal separately and confirm who will carry it outside.
