Houston Moving & Home-Sale Prep Guide
Plan your Houston move around truck access, building reservations, and the date the old home needs to be empty. Share the loading route with your mover before confirming an arrival window. If you’re selling, schedule clearing, repairs, painting, and cleaning around listing photos. Check bulky-item removal early so furniture left behind has a confirmed destination before the walkthrough.
What to plan for your Houston move or sale
Moving to or within Houston
Send your mover the actual entrance, loading location, and photos of any tight access. For a gated property, ask how the truck and crew will check in. For a condo or apartment, confirm truck clearance and any loading-dock or elevator reservation. Give the mover those details before agreeing to a delivery window.
Selling a Houston-area home
Walk through the garage, patio, and storage areas along with the main rooms. Ask your agent what should stay for listing photos and which fixtures or appliances are expected to remain. Give removal crews a written list, then book the final clean after hauling, repairs, and painting are finished.
Furniture delivery and decorating
Measure the route to the room, especially for upstairs bedrooms or a townhome with turns between floors. Confirm the dimensions of the largest assembled piece or delivery carton. Once the main furniture is placed, choose locations for curtains, mirrors, and shelves, then group the installation jobs that are ready.
TV mounting and DIY
Take a wide photo of the intended TV wall showing the seating and nearby outlets. Share the TV and bracket model numbers, along with any soundbar or equipment you want included. Have the mounting surface checked if its construction is unclear, and confirm building or landlord instructions before booking.
Will heavy-trash collection fit your move-out deadline?
Check Houston’s current heavy-trash schedule for the address before planning curbside removal. Confirm the accepted items, quantity limits, and set-out window. If collection falls after your key return or walkthrough, compare an eligible residential drop-off option with a separate removal crew. Ask who will carry the items out and where they will go.
If your building uses private collection or your address is elsewhere in the Houston area, check the provider serving that property.
Example — Moving from a townhome into an apartment
Suppose your sofa is upstairs and the destination offers a Friday afternoon elevator slot. Show the mover the stairs and turns before asking how early loading needs to start. If an old mattress is staying behind for removal, confirm its collection separately. Keep the final cleaning after the furniture is out, and leave time to photograph the empty rooms before handing back the keys.
