Can I Fix This Myself, or Should I Call a Pro?
Try it yourself when the cause is clear, you have the right tools, and a mistake would be easy to undo. Call a handyman for a defined list of small jobs you’d rather hand off. If the problem keeps coming back or you can’t tell what’s causing it, get the appropriate specialist to look at it before you cover it up or take anything apart.
Three ways to handle a home repair
Do it yourself
A loose cabinet pull with an intact screw is a reasonable place to start. Check that you have the right tool and can see how the part attaches. If the screw spins without tightening, pause and work out why before forcing it or switching to a larger screw.
Bundle small jobs for a handyman
If you have several tasks, such as adjusting cabinet doors, replacing matching hardware, and assembling a nightstand, send one room-by-room list. Include photos and note which parts you already have. Ask the provider to confirm what can be done in one visit.
Call the specialist who can assess the cause
A ceiling stain that returns after painting needs someone to find the moisture source before another coat goes on. If a breaker trips frequently, ask a qualified electrician to check it. Read the U.S. Fire Administration’s electrical safety guidance.
What to write down before starting or booking
- Describe what you see. Write “the cabinet door rubs at the top when it closes” so a pro knows what to look for.
- Note what changed. Did it start after moving furniture, installing something, or seeing a stain after rain? Mention anything you already tried.
- Take two useful photos. One wide shot shows where the issue is. One close-up shows the loose part, damaged area, or product label, if you can reach it without taking anything apart.
- Say what you want finished. Ask whether the visit includes assessment, repair, parts, and any cleanup or touch-up you expect.
Example — A loose pull, a sticking door, and a stain that came back
Try tightening the pull if the hardware looks intact. Add the sticking interior door and any other clearly defined jobs to a handyman list. Photograph the returning stain and note when you see it change. Have the cause checked before adding the stain to a patch-and-paint visit.
Not sure who to call or what to ask for?
Bring a wide photo, a close-up, and a short note about what you’ve already tried. We’ll review what’s visible, help you separate the small jobs from issues that need an on-site assessment, and work through what to ask when you book.
