What Can I Donate and What Needs to Be Hauled Away?
Start by offering clean, usable furniture and household goods to a donation provider that accepts them. Set aside broken or heavily damaged items for hauling, and check local collection or recycling options for anything that needs separate handling. Before you count on a donation pickup, confirm both the item and where the crew will collect it.
Sort by condition, acceptance, and access
Offer clean, usable items for donation
Start with sturdy tables, chairs, dressers with working drawers, and complete sets of household goods. Send photos and describe the condition honestly. Ask about size limits, missing parts, and whether the provider accepts upholstered furniture before you book.
Confirm pickup before counting on it
An organization may accept a dresser at its drop-off location but be unable to carry it down your stairs. Give the provider the item dimensions, floor number, and elevator or loading details. Ask whether pickup is inside the home, at the curb, or at another designated spot.
Ask about recycling or separate collection
Keep mattresses, electronics, and appliances on a separate list while you check what your local programs accept. Contact your local waste program for instructions on leftover paint or other materials a donation provider or hauler may decline.
Get a haul-away quote for the rest
Send the hauler a list of damaged furniture, items the donation provider declined, and anything you need carried out. Ask what the quote includes for stairs, disassembly, and individual items. If you may add pieces after donation pickup, ask how the price would change.
How to book donation and hauling in the right order
- Photograph the larger pieces. Take a wide shot and a close-up of any wear. Include the dimensions and where each item is now.
- Confirm the donation list. Ask the provider which pieces it expects to take, what it will check at pickup, and what you need to move beforehand.
- Set a backup date. Leave time between the donation appointment and your move or walkthrough. Confirm what the hauler can take if a donation item is declined.
- Update the final pickup list. After the donation crew leaves, send the hauler photos of what remains. Keep anything staying with the home in a clearly marked area.
Example — A dining set, a worn sofa, and an old mattress
Send the donation provider photos of the dining set and ask whether it can collect the table and all the chairs from inside. Describe the sofa’s wear and get a separate haul-away price in case it’s declined. Check mattress collection options for your address. Once those plans are confirmed, you’ll know which items can go together and which need their own appointment.
Not sure what to donate or what to book for pickup?
Bring photos, a list of the larger pieces, and the date everything needs to be out. We’ll help you sort the list and identify what to confirm with donation providers, recyclers, and haulers before you schedule them.
