Moving to New England Conservatory in Boston? Plan Fall 2026 move-in, Student Life and Performance Center housing, instrument protection, residence-hall packing, Symphony and Back Bay transportation, and off-campus apartment setup.
Starting at NEC
Move-in is different when instruments are part of the load
New England Conservatory is centered around St. Botolph Street and Huntington Avenue near Symphony Hall, Back Bay, Fenway and the South End.
In addition to normal dorm belongings, NEC students may arrive with valuable instruments, music stands, scores, recording equipment and other specialized gear. Keep high-value instruments with the student rather than mixed into general unloading whenever practical.

New England Conservatory move-in dates
Check-in
Start at the Student Life and Performance Center
Go to 255 St. Botolph Street
Residence-hall check-in takes place inside the lobby of the Student Life and Performance Center during published move-in days.
Follow security directions
Drivers are directed to temporary unloading areas outside the Student Life and Performance Center.
Unload into moving bins
Student volunteers may assist with moving bins while the resident completes the check-in process and locates the assigned room.
Relocate the vehicle
Parking is limited. Move the vehicle promptly after unloading and use available metered spaces or nearby garages when necessary.

Living in the Student Life and Performance Center
SLPC Residence Hall
NEC’s residence hall is integrated into the Student Life and Performance Center at 255 St. Botolph Street.
Single, Double, Triple and Suite
NEC offers several configurations. Most traditional rooms are shared, and incoming first-year students may be placed in triple rooms depending on space.
Lounges on Each Floor
Residential floors include lounges with seating, tables and televisions for studying and socializing.
Community Kitchen
The fourth-floor kitchen includes shared refrigeration, microwave and cooking facilities.
Laundry Facilities
Laundry is available inside the residence hall. Students should bring their own detergent.
Practice Rules
Students may practice in residence rooms only during designated hours. Dedicated practice rooms are available elsewhere on campus.
Housing requirement
First- and second-year undergraduates generally live on campus
Incoming undergraduate students are generally required to live in NEC housing for their first four semesters. Graduate students and other eligible students may seek available housing through NEC’s housing process or explore off-campus options.

Refrigerator and microwave
NEC requires the approved MicroFridge format
Students who want refrigeration or a microwave in their room must use an approved MicroFridge combination unit. Separate mini refrigerators and standalone microwaves are not permitted.
Only one MicroFridge is permitted per room, so roommates should coordinate before purchasing or renting one.
NEC also provides shared refrigerators and a microwave in the fourth-floor community kitchen.
Fire safety
Leave prohibited appliances at home
No Standalone Microwave
Use only the approved MicroFridge system or the shared residence kitchen.
No Separate Mini Fridge
Separate personal refrigerators are prohibited under current NEC housing guidance.
No High-Heat Appliances
Many personal cooking and heating appliances are prohibited in residence rooms.
No Candles or Incense
Open-flame and burning fragrance products are prohibited.
No Bed Risers
NEC beds already use adjustable frames; external bed risers are prohibited.
No Space Heaters
Personal space heaters and air conditioners are prohibited because rooms include climate controls.
Instrument protection
Treat musical instruments as high-value property
NEC recommends considering insurance for personal belongings and, where applicable, musical instruments. The conservatory does not insure student property stored in the residence hall.
Photograph valuable instruments, record serial numbers, keep purchase or appraisal records and review whether an existing homeowners policy or specialty instrument policy provides adequate coverage.
Large-instrument storage is limited. NEC notes that students may apply for campus lockers, but off-campus students receive priority for available locker space.
Shipping
Packages can begin arriving August 15
NEC’s mail and copy center can begin accepting student packages on August 15. Students should follow the Housing Welcome email for specific Fall 2026 shipping and move-in instructions.
Resident mail is addressed to the student at New England Conservatory, 255 St. Botolph Street, Boston, MA 02115-5018, including the student’s name and room number when known.
Parking and transit
NEC strongly discourages keeping a car on campus
No on-campus student parking
NEC does not provide on-campus parking. Nearby garage parking can be expensive, and move-in curb space is limited.

The residence hall is close to Massachusetts Avenue on the Orange Line, Symphony on the Green Line E branch and major bus routes.
