Which Harvard campus are you moving near?

Harvard is not limited to one campus location. Harvard College, Harvard Law School, the Kennedy School and several graduate programs are centered around Harvard Square and Cambridge. Harvard Business School is across the Charles River in Allston, while Harvard Medical School and Harvard Chan are associated with the Longwood Medical Area in Boston.

Before choosing housing, identify the student’s actual school, primary buildings and daily destination. An apartment that is ideal for Harvard College may be less convenient for a student traveling to Longwood or the Business School.

Fall 2026

Harvard College move-in dates and appointments

Harvard uses different procedures for first-year students and upper-level students. Always confirm the student’s individual instructions before booking travel.

First-year students

Harvard schedules first-year move-in over three dates based partly on participation in pre-orientation programs. Individual arrival information is sent to students.

August 3, 2026

Move-in appointment selection is scheduled to open at noon for sophomores, juniors and seniors with active fall housing.

August 27–28

Approved upper-level early-arrival dates. Students must qualify through an approved group or process.

August 29

Harvard College Houses are scheduled to open at 8:00 a.m. for upper-level Fall 2026 move-in.

Arrival slots

Upper-level appointments are offered in one-hour increments from 8:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.

Where do Harvard College students live?

First-year students

Harvard College first-year students live in dormitories in or adjacent to Harvard Yard. Students are organized into four residential Yard communities and typically live in suites with shared common areas and bedrooms.

Upper-level students

Sophomores, juniors and seniors generally live in Harvard’s residential House system. Each House has its own dining, community and residential facilities.

How Harvard College move-in works

Wait for the official arrival assignment

First-year students receive their date, time, key pickup location and driving directions directly from Harvard. Upper-level students choose an available appointment through the Residential Portal.

Bring identification and collect your own key

Harvard does not allow another student or friend to collect a resident’s key on their behalf.

Use the assigned arrival window

Coordinated arrival periods help reduce congestion around Harvard Yard, the Houses and surrounding Cambridge streets.

Arrange off-campus storage independently

Harvard College does not provide on-campus storage. Students who need storage or shipping must make arrangements with an outside provider.

Bring less until you see the room

Harvard advises students that dorm rooms are small and that students may not know the exact room configuration or dimensions in advance. Roommates should coordinate after receiving assignments to avoid duplicate purchases.

Dorm-room restrictions

Do not mount or alter anything without permission

Students should not drill, mount televisions, install permanent shelving or alter Harvard-provided furniture unless current written housing rules specifically permit the work.

Because room sizes and configurations vary, freestanding storage, desk organizers and other reversible solutions are generally safer than purchasing wall-mounted products before arrival.
